Market Needs

Residential networks have undergone significant changes in the last decade, with service providers (SPs) offering bundled triple-play services to their customers. Subscribers are offered with packages that combine voice, video and data services, delivered in most cases together on the same infrastructure. However, utilizing a single medium to carry all services imposes certain requirements on the access network and the transport metro infrastructure supporting it. With a variety of service requirements ranging from always-available lifeline telephony, through jitter/delay sensitive video services and down to unguaranteed high bandwidth internet access, service providers can no longer settle for a single profile to cater for them all.
Implementation of transport and access networks for residential triple play services require the ability to accommodate different types of traffic, from the most stringent to the cheapest, low-cost high-bandwidth “best effort” services. The capped average revenues per user (ARPU) in the residential market impose a bigger challenge of supporting such flexible and high-quality services in the lowest cost possible.

Service Providers’ Challenges

  • How to support various service types per customer that are different in almost every dimension?
  • What is the way to maintain simplicity in mass deployment of millions of subscribers? How can the transport network add minimal complexity to the overall solution?
  • What is the way to increase security to the network, separating subscribers traffic from each other and from the operator’s data?
  • In the ever-changing environment of residential users, how can the transport network be constantly monitored, analyzed and optimized to ensure maximum utilization?

Ethos Networks’ Solution

Ethos Networks Carrier Ethernet transport (CET) solution allow service providers aggregate the traffic from/to their triple-play access networks, in the well-known simplicity and convenience of Ethernet. With their intrinsic simplified transport structure, they address the needs for low-cost implementation of the aggregation layer, avoiding the complexities associated with IP/MPLS routers and enabling cost-conscious implementation of multi-service network architecture. Using a combination of connection-oriented and connectionless Carrier Ethernet technologies, Ethos Networks’ solutions enable support of various grades of service for different purposes. Voice traffic can be carried to the voice switch over assured-quality tunnels with low delay, jitter and packet loss. Broadcast video can be carried over E-Tree point-to-multipoint tunnels with limited jitter and packet loss, while interactive bidirectional video shall be using dedicated E-Line point-to-point tunnels that require in addition limited delay. Internet access and data services can use E-LAN multipoint-to-multipoint services utilizing connectionless Ethernet technology.
The ability to tailor for each service its appropriate transport mechanism allows Ethos Networks solution to optimally use the network resources and ensure users’ Quality of Experience (QoE). Ethos Networks complements its offering with the Domain Management System (DMS) that provides SPs with a comprehensive view of the transport network, simplifying network planning, service provisioning and service assurance. Integrated network monitoring, analysis and optimization tools allow SPs to constantly monitor their packet network, identify bottlenecks and optimize traffic flow within the network. Managing of a packet transport network that supports millions of subscribers is becoming much simpler, reducing operational expenses and training costs.

Solution Benefits:

  • Flexible packet transport solution, supporting any required SLA profile for various services and customers
  • Optimized traffic flow enabling maximum utilization of the network
  • Enhanced QoS capabilities to support strict voice and video services
  • Carrier-grade service - five 9s availability (99.999%)
  • Simple service provisioning and service assurance – practical to scale to support millions of subscribers
  • Network optimization to maximize assets utilization
  • Cost effective and simple solution; pure Ethernet without the limitations of legacy design or the burden of complex routing protocols.
