Word on the Ethernet transport standards street is that Provider Backbone Bridging - Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE), the controversial connection-oriented Ethernet technology formerly known as PBT, is now a ratified Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) standard. The timing is about right: Back on April 21 we said PBB-TE, or P802.1Qay in pure IEEE-speak, was weeks away from becoming standardized. (See IEEE to Rubber-Stamp PBB-TE .) It seems the official announcement will not be long in coming, so keep an eye out for it. In the meantime, here's a statement from Hayim Porat, CTO at Ethos Networks Ltd. , who is an IEEE standards committee member and co-author of the PBB-TE standard: We believe that as a result of the completion of the standardization process the industry will see an increase in service providers’ interest in deploying carrier Ethernet solutions based on PBB/PBB-TE. Service providers that were forced to settle on non-standard vendor-specific implementations and those who were reluctant to invest in pre-standard solutions, now have an IEEE-approved reference they can turn to.
